Is it the real development?
We all feel that we are all developing and are all getting modernized. Economically we feel we are moving from poverty to richness. Our governments always talk about industrialization, more investments and more jobs. We are all seeing many 4 wheelers on the road. Imported and costly cars are seen on even village roads. Roads are getting widened. More airports are coming. People are flying even to near by places. Is it the real development we want?
My answer to the above question is ‘NO’. More companies are coming and it is a part of their business. In India labor is cheap. So many companies from other countries also may be coming here. The lives of the poor people who are working on the shop floor are at stake. There is no guarantee that a person going to job in the morning will come back safely home in the night.
We all talk about a farmer who is struggling in the field, a soldier suffering near the borders of the country to safe guard the country. But we never talk about a worker who is giving his blood for making their bosses happy. I feel their lives are also very important.
An investor is starting his business for profits with the support that is being given by the government. The governments also inviting them happily as more revenue will come. Educated and uneducated people are also happy for that as they are getting some livelihood. But unfortunately, the managements are not keeping an eye on the safety of the employee. They work with production first concept. So, they want more and more value addition so that their bottom line will be attractive. To achieve their financial goals, they will try to minimize their expenses and maximize output. Hence there will not be any spending for the safety of the workmen or employee. The concerned government officials are helpless as they will not be given a free hand or sufficient time. Many managements think spending money on safety systems is a waste. This mind set is only causing all the problems. This mindset is only the root cause for all the accidents we are hearing these days. In this game of money earning all are getting lucrative returns except the employee, especially the bottom-line employee.
We don’t have any respect for the lives of the workers. Money is more important than the life of a worker who is sweating for our betterment. Many people are dying in these industrial accidents. When an accident happens, we see a lot of noise for all quarters of the society. The police will book a case, the government will order for enquiry, the management will announce compensation the family of the deceased employee. About a week or 10 days we will hear about the accident and then we all forget. In this entire issue the loser is the person who is losing his/ her life. Even the family of the deceased employee may also forget the incident as they got good amount of money as compensation.
All governments and investors should think what they are doing is correct or not. They all should practice the safety-first concept. They should implement all the systems that are necessary to avoid human loss because of accidents that may happen. Otherwise, a day will come where no person is ready to work on the shop floor.
